6-footers can fit in the K5’s rear compartment, even if the panoramic sunroof is deployed, thanks to its big doors and generous headroom. If you need to provide three people across, you may fold down the back seat to enhance the trunk’s 16.0-cubic-foot capacity. These lower-end models have more plastic than the GT or EX variants, despite the K5’s bright design. To annoy even the most discerning, all versions feature fingerprint-encrusted shiny plastic doorknobs. Due to the use of synthetic leather, the interiors of the EX and GT are more expensive.
Engine
A 1.6-liter turbo-4 engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission in most of the K5 sedans transfers power to either the front or all four wheels. Fast gear shifts and an early torque peak translate into good acceleration off the mark in this masterful performance. It’s a hushed car to drive and has several drive modes to help with shifting and responding faster to stabby gas inputs. A vehicle with an all-wheel-drive may be necessary if there is significant snow or ice on the road. It’s not required for most folks.
As a result of increasing the steering weight in Sport mode, the K5 is better equipped to maintain control of its lane. Nothing about it is mushy or sentimental, but the execution is spot on. When equipped with the 18-inch wheels found on the higher-end trim levels, the K5’s ride can be rough and lumpy at lower speeds. It gets better as you go faster, especially on the mid-range 17-inch wheels, which are calibrated for a smooth, controlled ride. At any speed, the K5’s brakes are excellent. Pedal stiffness and mushiness are never an issue.
